Funny Thing

There are few things in my life that I can say are absolutely certain.

As Brandon says: “Death, taxes, and an empty splenda packet on the counter every morning.”  (He thinks he’s hilarious.)

But one thing I’ve always known to be true, is my deep-rooted hatred for a certain sound.  A sound filled with twang, and banjos and rants about ‘merica.  Yes.  It’s true.  I am a country music hater.

Well.. until recently, that is.  You see, lately, there has been a change in me.  I haven’t been doing things like aggressively changing the station and mumbling things about stupid horses and beer cans under my breath.  I will even admit to you that I’ve even found myself actually singing along to a few god-forsaken cuntry’ songs.  (I know!  I am as shocked and surprised as you are.)  To be clear, these songs are few and far between, and most of them would probably be considered “pop country”, but still.  Progress people.

Now I’m not saying I’m going to sit through the CMA’s or go buy a Lady Antebellum cd (which I may or may not have burned onto my desktop- SHHHHH!), but I have to say, the times, they are a-changing.  Plus I kind of want to get drunk and polish guns with Miranda Lambert.

On another music note (that is how you pun, people) I figured I’d share a few songs with you that I have been a little to extremely obsessed with as of late.  Also none of them are country.  I’m not there yet.  Give it time.

The always sexual, John Mayer.  (Can’t. Stop. Listening.)

Foster the People: Not just a one-hit wonder, friends.

Last but not least…a new addition to my iPod and I suggest you make them part of yours too: Crash Kings (Black Keys-esque)

What are you listening to lately?  (PS- I have to thank Jess for the inspiration to write this post today.  That girl gets me.)

Please like & share:

  1. The crash kings are the bomb! I love them! If you like them, you might like American Bang 🙂

  2. Oh my gosh, not to sound rediculous but as I was reading this I felt that i was reading something that my brain wrote haha.
I have ALWAYS absolutely HATED country music… until about 6 months ago. My best friend in Alaska loves country and i figured since I was moving to NC I better get used to it… so she was absolutely thrilld when i told her to make me a playlist of country songs that arent horrible to ease me into it. surprisingly i like SOME. but i cant say i love it all, and you wont find me watching CMT but i can definitely sing along and enjoy some. I do like Luke Bryan & Jason Aaldean, they are just more new age. And im sorry, but i probably may never like taylor swift.

  3. I am not a huge country music fan either but lately I’ve been loving some country stuff. I really like the Rascal Flatts and Lady Antebellum is slowly becoming a favorite of mine. 🙂

  4. Quit hatin’ on my country! Okay, I’ll give you a pass.

  5. I used to make fun of my John Deere-driving country hick friend ALL THE TIME in high school for her “weird hillbilly obsession with country.” Then I went to a college where, if the wind is blowing a certain way, the scent of cow “pies” wafts through campus from the dairy barn. Needless to say, I went in rockin’ to Incubus (ok, more like had one cd and was still rockin’ to Justin Timberlake, but whatevsies) and left a bona fide country fan who has now paid big $$ to see Brad Paisley and Toby Keith on multiple occasions. Kenny Chesney was my gateway drug, but I will say that The Band Perry makes me want to stab myself repeatedly.

  6. I hated country until a Keith Urban song became my husband and my first dance song at our wedding. And John Mayer could make me listen to ANYTHING.

  7. I love me some sexy John Mayer. And I am a closet country lover. I’m not proud of the fact I like it, I know how terrible it can be. For that reason, I only listen to it when I’m by myself, well that and because every other song makes me sob… and I don’t like to cry in public as someone once told me I’m an ugly cryer.

Also, right now I’m on an Avett Brothers kick. Especially this song:

  8. gimme dat john mayer! love his stupid music. hate his stupid ‘tude.

  9. Pulled out the Christmas CD’s yesterday.

  10. I HATE COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!! Foster The People are good though.

  11. I love me some country music! But John Mayer is my all-time favorite musician. Once, when leaving a JM concert, the ladies behind me were talking about how listening to him is “musical masturbation.” I believe they had a few beers in them at this point.

  12. I’ve recently secretly fallen in love with country too. I used to be a hater, but I love me some John Mayer, Jewel, Taylor Swift and The Band Perry. My bf is from PA and always makes fun that dating him opened my eyes to country.

  13. Hahaha you sound exactly like me!! I have always HATED country music! In fact take the o and the r out and what do you have?? Haha! Howeverrr I have by chance heard a couple of songs recently and found myself kinda tapping my foot! :/ Ickk aside from the odd country song I have been listening to Emeli Sande quite a bit recently… ‘Heaven’ and ‘Kill the Boy’ are my faves!

  14. Loveeee music posts like this, especially since thanks to you I discovered The Weepies!! I can’t stop listening to that new Drake / RIhanna song “Take Care” and also Peter Bradley Adams (Los Angeles) for something slow & soothing 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

  15. I <3 country music. Welcome to the dark side 🙂

  16. I’ve always loved country music. I rarely listen to anything else. 🙂

  17. Ahhh, and finally a difference between us. I have very specific taste in music that is equal parts oldies, classic rock, and top 40 haha. But basically if its the new trendy thing that “everyone lovvvvves” (read: jon mayer, lady antebellum, adele, dmb) then I usually hate it. I like going against the grain like that. This does not hold true for usher or gaga or katy perry though. And oddly enough, lately I’ve been in a very beatles frame of mind, which goes against basically everyone I just wrote haha.

Do you get me? I hope so cause I don’t.

  18. I never liked country music until I went to college and it was everywhere. It has really grown on me over the years. The only thing that annoys me is the radio jockeys on country stations tend to be uber obnoxious.
